Day 5 – 11/26/2018

My mind has been scattered all over the place. It’s been a pretty productive day, but I still find my mind wandering over the place. I suppose I’ll write again about a song that I heard on the radio on the way home from visiting my mother and taking her out to eat.

This song made me think of all of the many verses in the Bible that talk about the words we say and how they have so much influence to the world around us.

Words by Hawk Nelson

They’ve made me feel like a prisoner
They’ve made me feel set free
They’ve made me feel like a criminal
Made me feel like a king

(I’ve had words make me feel like a prisoner, stuck in a tiny cage, insignificant like I don’t even matter and I’ve had words that make me feel like I’m flying in the sky, I often hear words of anger and scorn that make me feel like I’ve committed a heinous crime, when I haven’t. Oftentimes, from my very mind, the lies of Satan. I’ve heard words that make me feel like royalty, when I read the truths of the Bible and actually believe them, as heirs of Christ and Heaven, we are kings and queens.)

They’ve lifted my heart
To places I’d never been
And they’ve dragged me down
Back to where I began

(I’ve had thoughts, realizations and words build me up to places I’ve never been. It’s more uncommon these days, but that’s not how it should be. Unkind words and thoughtless drivel can knock you down just as fast as you are lifted up. We need to be aware of what we’re saying and the way we’re saying things.)

Words can build you up
Words can break you down
Start a fire in your heart or
Put it out

(Again, these are just reiterating on the previous verses. They can build us up and they can break us down just as quickly. They can make us feel like we’re alive or as dead as a fire that doesn’t have enough sparks to be revived.)

Let my words be life
Let my words be truth
I don’t wanna say a word
Unless it points the world back to You

(Our words should be life to others. They should speak truth to others. God’s truth. Everything we say should point them back to Christ. We need to be careful what we say to others. We need to be so careful of what we say, as once we speak a word, it cannot be unsaid. It is done.)

You can heal the heartache
Speak over the fear
(Speak over the fear)
God, Your voice is the only thing
We need to hear
(We need to hear)

(I am so familiar with heartache. I’ve suffered from it most of my life, but I’m not going to go into details here. I’ve been fearful, so much fear in my life, but Christ can heal that heartache, he can heal that pain and he can speak truth over the fear and have it fade away.)

Words can build us up
Words can break us down
Start a fire in our hearts or
Put it out

(repeat stanza)

Let my words be life
Let my words be truth
I don’t wanna say a word
Unless it points the world back to You
(repeat stanza)

Let the words I say
(Let the words I say)
Be the sound of Your grace
(Sound like Your grace)
I don’t wanna say a word
Unless it points the world back to You

(The only real difference here is that we want to be the sound of your your Grace. Reflecting the love that he reflected onto other’s. Again, not saying a thing unless it points the world back to you.)

I wanna speak Your love
Not just another noise
Oh, I wanna be Your light
I wanna be Your voice

(It’s so easy to be yet another noise in this already chaotic world. A noisy gong that doesn’t really mean anything. We need to be a light that reflects Christ in us, living our lives in a manner that truly reflects who Christ is.)

Let my words be life
Let my words be truth
I don’t wanna say a word
Unless it points the world back to You
(Back to You)

(repeat)

Let the words I say
(Let the words I say)
Be the sound of Your grace
(Sound like Your grace)
I don’t wanna say a word
Unless it points the world back to You
(Back to You)

(repeat)

Words can build us up
Words can break us down
Start a fire in our hearts
Or put it out
I don’t wanna say a word
Unless it points the world back to You

(repeat)

Here are some verses in the Bible about how we should speak as Christian’s.

Ephesians 5:4-5

Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

James 1:26 –

If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.

1 Peter 3:10 –

For, “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech.

Colossians 4:6 –

Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

Ephesians 4:29 –

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Proverbs 10:19 –

Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues.

Proverbs 15:28 –

The heart of the righteous weighs its answers, but the mouth of the wicked gushes evil.

Proverbs 17:27-28

27 The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint, and whoever has understanding is even-tempered.

28 Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues.

Proverbs 13:3

Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.

Matthew 12:36-37

I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Proverbs 15:1 –

A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

There are so many more verses than this about how we should live our lives, in obedience to Christ, watching our tongues, building others up. Let’s be aware of what we’re saying, what we’re thinking and how those thoughts also impact what we say. Watch what we’re putting into our minds and hearts, as that influences what comes out.

There are many more tangents that I could go on tonight, however, I’m just going to call it a day.

Have a great whatever it is where you are,

Just Stephen
